Dr. Brent Stephens

Dr. Brent Stephens has served as Superintendent of the Lafayette School District since July 2022, where he leads with a focus on academic excellence, fiscal stewardship, and belonging for all members of the school community. Under his leadership, Lafayette schools have earned the California Distinguished School Award five times in three years, a testament to the district’s commitment to instructional excellence and student achievement.

During Dr. Stephens’ tenure, the District has successfully navigated a downturn in state revenue through sustained engagement with teachers, classified staff, families, and community members. Prior to joining Lafayette, Dr. Stephens served as Superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School District, where he led the district through the COVID-19 pandemic and helped pass a $380 million construction bond and a series of initiatives to increase teacher salaries and support historically underserved student communities. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Academic Officer for the San Francisco Unified School District, where he led curriculum and professional development and worked on inclusive reforms in special education and early literacy.

Dr. Stephens began his career as a Spanish bilingual teacher in Oakland and Boston, supporting immigrant students and earning National Board Certification. His experience as a principal in both elementary and middle schools informs his deep understanding of standards-based instruction, differentiation, and the importance of honoring students’ backgrounds and cultures in the classroom.

He holds a doctorate from Harvard University, and his work on school reform has been published by Harvard Education Press. Outside of work, Dr. Stephens enjoys spending time with his family, hiking the East Bay hills, and making art and music.
