Volunteer Requirements

HEADLINE: In the 24-25 school year, LAFSD will begin to use “Be A Mentor” as a way to support on-campus volunteering. Be A Mentor is an private online platform that will handle volunteer registration and screening.

Dear Lafayette School District Parents and Caregivers:

Happy Summer! As we plan for the upcoming school year, we wanted to update you on a new volunteer management system that we will be using at all our schools beginning this August.

Ensuring student safety is our top priority. Last year, the Lafayette School District updated its volunteer screening procedures (see below) to better protect our students, providing varying levels of screening for different types of volunteer roles. Throughout the school year, more than 400 parents and caregivers registered as volunteers, significantly contributing to the success and vibrancy of our schools.

For the 2024-2025 school year, in order to enhance the efficiency of our  volunteer screening process, the District will use "Be A Mentor," an online portal developed by Voluntas. This system will streamline the registration process for parents and caregivers, making it easier for them to serve in all volunteer capacities.

Be A Mentor At A Glance

  • Volunteers must create an account in the Be A Mentor portal, which goes live on July 8th. We recommend starting this process before August 1, 2024, to avoid delays.
  • In order to complete the account creation process, volunteers must provide:
    • Driver’s license or state-issued ID
    • TB clearance
    • Live scan fingerprinting
  • Note: Volunteers who submitted fingerprints to the District last year will not be required to redo the Live Scan.
  • Volunteers will swipe their drivers license or state-issued ID in the school office upon arrival. A name badge will be printed after you swipe, which must be worn at all times while on campus.

Additional information and updates will be provided as we launch the Be A Mentor website and update the LAFSD Volunteer webpage. In the meantime, if you have additional questions, please contact our Student Services group at [email protected].

Again, thank you for volunteering in our schools. Together, we’re an amazing team!

Warmly,

Brent Stephens

Superintendent

HOW TO CREATE YOUR “BE A MENTOR” ACCOUNT

To complete the clearance process via the Be A Mentor portal, you will need:

  1. State-Issued Driver’s License or State Identification
  2. Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance:
    1. Proof of TB clearance within the last four years is required.
    2. If you need TB clearance, consult your medical provider or find community testing options. Or access the website https://www.cchealth.org/health-insurance/my-contra-costa-health-plan/provider-directory
    3. More information on TB testing is available from Contra Costa Health Services.
    4. If you do not have access to previous TB screening results submitted to your school, you may pick up your proof of clearance at the District Office on certain specified dates this summer. Details will be provided by late June.
  3. Live Scan Fingerprinting:
    1. Use a provider of your choice. Local providers can be found here or on the website: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations
    2. Download this Live Scan form and take it to your local provider.
    3. If you completed Live Scan for LAFSD in the 2023-24 school year, repeating this step is optional if you create your Be A Mentor profile before August 31, 2024.

Background clearance will include reports from the Department of Justice and the FBI, as well as a sex offender registry search.
