Dear Lafayette Families,
Welcome to the third and final letter in my back-to-school series. This week, I’d like to share some important reminders and resources about school safety. The well-being of our students—both on and off campus—is a responsibility we all share, and one of the most important ways we can work together as a community.
Bike, E-Bike, and E Scooter Safety
We encourage all students who ride to school to do so safely and confidently. Please talk with your child about:
-
Wearing a properly fitted helmet every time they ride.
-
Biking with friends when possible.
-
Stopping at all stop signs and lights, obeying traffic signals, and walking bikes in crosswalks.
-
Staying on sidewalks or bike lanes and out of the street whenever possible.
Bikes should not be ridden on campus at any time, including before and after school.
Students who ride e-bikes are required to register their bikes in the school office and complete an online bike safety course before riding to campus. Information about the District’s e bike registration process can be found at this link on our website.
Please note that e-scooters are not permitted on any LAFSD campus, as California law requires a valid driver’s license to operate one.
Campus Safety
Each LAFSD school has a comprehensive safety plan, which is reviewed annually. You can find a summary of the plan on each school’s website for your reference.
In addition, the Lafayette and Acalanes districts hosted a community forum recently on school safety; the recording from the forum can be found on the Parent Education page of our website and is an excellent overview of the District’s collaboration with the Lafayette Police Department on safety.
Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for Stanley Students
I would also like to share an important new resource that is now available to our students and community. California Senate Bill (SB) 1063 requires schools to print the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number on the back of every student ID card for middle and high schools. The 988 Lifeline is a new, easy-to-remember three-digit number that provides free, confidential, and immediate support for anyone in emotional distress or suicidal crisis. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be accessed by:

Gun Safety at Home
California law requires school districts to share information with families about safe firearm storage. Keeping guns secured and inaccessible to children is a critical part of ensuring their safety at home and in the community. You can find more information and resources on this topic on the California Department of Education gun safety page.
As we begin this school year, I want to thank you for your partnership in creating a safe environment for every student—whether they’re traveling to school, learning in the classroom, or spending time at home. Working together, we can ensure that every child in Lafayette feels supported, protected, and ready to learn.
Warmly,
Brent Stephens
Superintendent
